BTRC caps Indian bandwidth import to 50%

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) yesterday reduced the national usage of terrestrial bandwidth imported from India to 50%.
"Every IIG operator must ensure that no more than 50 per cent of their total internet traffic is routed through International Terrestrial Cables (ITCs)," the regulator said in its amended clause of International Internet Gateway (IIG) Licensing Guideline.
Besides, for a level playing field for the submarine cable and terrestrial cable businesses, the regulator has raised the rate of mandatory revenue sharing with the government to 3% from 1% for the ITCs.
For that the BTRC has amended its ITC Licensing Guideline's relevant clause.
The regulator, following a Posts and Telecommunications Division decision in January, now eyes raising the market share of submarine internet to 60% from 40%.
