Bangladesh sees steep decline in poverty rate
The poverty rate in Bangladesh declined substantially to 18.7% in 2022 from 24.3% in 2016, BBS statistics showed on Wednesday.
The hardcore poor segment notably reduced to 5.6% in 2022 from 12.9% in 2016, the Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) report of BBS, unveiled Wednesday, showed.
However, income inequality in the country increased as the Gini-Coefficient widened to 0.499 in 2022 from 0.482 in 2016, the HIES showed. The per capita household income boosted to Tk 33,422 in 2022 from Tk 15,988 in 2016.
On the other hand, the per capita household expenditure increased to Tk 31,500 in 2022 from Tk 15,715 in 2016.
