Omicron risk is  very high : WHO

The risk posed by the Omicron variant is still  very high _ the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday_ after COVID-19 case numbers shot up by 11 percent globally last week.

Omicron is behind the rapid virus spikes in many countries_ the WHO said in its COVID-19 weekly epidemiological update. It has already overtaken the previously-dominant Delta variant in several nations_ including the UK and the US.

The news comes as several European countries_ including France_ the UK_ Italy_ Greece_ and Portugal all hit record daily infections. France reported almost 180_000 cases in a 24-hour period on Tuesday.

The surge of Omicron in the UK is continuing  unabated and across many other parts of Europe.

Several countries_ including Germany_ Switzerland and the Netherlands_ expect the fast-spreading variant to be the dominant strain within days. But noted there were differences in the way governments approached the situation.
