G7 commits $5 billion to tackle global food insecurity

The Group of Seven rich democracies_ commonly known as G7_ will commit up to $5 billion to improve global food security_ a senior US official said.

The group responds to worries in the low income and developing countries about the threat of hunger triggered by the Russia-Ukraine war.

On 28 June_ the final day of the G7 summit in Germany_ the US official said the United States would provide more than half of the amount_ which would go to efforts to fight hunger in 47 countries and to fund regional organisations.

The block of developed nations is attempting to rally emerging countries_ many with close ties to Russia_ to oppose Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine and invited five major middle-and-low income countries to the summit to win them over.

The G7 is an inter-governmental political forum consisting of Canada_ France_ Germany_ Italy_ Japan_ the United Kingdom and the United States.
